What Are Porcelain Veneers?

A quick guide to what veneers are, what they fix, what they cost, and what the process looks like.

There’s no better accessory than a confident smile — but teeth don’t always stay picture-perfect on their own. Porcelain veneers are one of the most common ways dentists address that gap: thin, custom-made shells bonded to the front of your teeth to change their shape, size, length, or colour.

Understanding Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are thin shells that cover a tooth’s front surface, made from a durable, stain-resistant ceramic that blends in with your natural teeth. Compared to composite bonding, porcelain holds its shade better over time and resists the coffee-and-red-wine staining that composite is more prone to.

What They Can Fix

  • Chips or minor cracks
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Teeth that are misshapen or slightly uneven
  • Discolouration that whitening can’t fully correct

The Veneer Process

Getting veneers typically starts with a consultation, where your dentist evaluates your oral health and talks through your goals. From there:

  1. A thin layer of enamel — usually well under a millimetre — is removed to make room for the veneer.
  2. Impressions of your prepared teeth are taken and sent to a dental lab, where your custom veneers are crafted.
  3. Temporary veneers protect your teeth while the permanent set is made.
  4. At your final visit, the permanent veneers are checked for fit and shade, then bonded in place with a strong dental adhesive.

The full process usually takes a few visits spread across a couple of weeks, depending on your case.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Veneers work best on teeth that are otherwise structurally healthy — the concern is cosmetic (shape, colour, minor unevenness) rather than significant decay or damage. A good candidate typically has healthy gums and enough enamel to support the veneer long-term. If you grind or clench your teeth, that’s not necessarily a dealbreaker, but your dentist will likely recommend a night guard to protect the investment.

Caring for Your Veneers

With proper care, porcelain veneers typically last 10 to 20 years. That means brushing twice daily with a non-abrasive toothpaste, flossing daily, avoiding using your teeth to open packages or bite into very hard foods, and keeping up with regular checkups so any small issue gets caught early.

Cost Considerations

Veneers are generally considered a cosmetic treatment, so most dental insurance plans don’t cover them. Cost varies based on how many teeth are involved, the complexity of your case, and the materials used — your dentist can walk you through a personalized estimate, along with any financing options, during your consultation.

Choosing the Right Dentist

Because veneers are a permanent decision, the dentist placing them matters as much as the material itself. Look for real experience in cosmetic dentistry, read patient reviews, and ask what technology the practice uses to plan your case precisely.
