How Long Does Teeth Whitening Last?
Results vary by method and habits — here's a realistic timeline.
Whitening isn’t permanent — but with the right method and habits afterward, results can last well over a year before a touch-up is needed.
By method
- Professional in-office whitening — often lasts 1 to 3 years, depending on diet and habits, since it uses a stronger concentration of whitening agent for a deeper result.
- Custom take-home trays — similarly long-lasting, often 1 to 3 years, with the advantage of easy top-up sessions at home.
- Over-the-counter strips or kits — generally shorter-lived, around 4 to 6 months, since the whitening concentration is lower.
What speeds up fading
- Coffee, tea, and red wine
- Smoking or tobacco use
- Dark sauces and berries
- Poor oral hygiene, which lets surface staining build back up faster

How to make results last longer
- Rinse with water after staining foods or drinks
- Keep up with regular brushing and flossing
- Use a straw for dark beverages when possible
- Schedule periodic touch-up treatments, especially with take-home trays
The realistic expectation
No whitening method is permanent, since your teeth are constantly exposed to the same staining factors that caused discolouration in the first place. Think of it as a result you maintain, not a one-time fix.
