Can Braces Fix TMJ Disorder?

Braces help some TMJ cases, not all — here's what actually determines whether they're the right tool.

TMJ disorder has a range of causes, and braces are genuinely helpful for some of them — but not a universal fix.

When Braces Can Help

If TMJ symptoms are being driven primarily by a misaligned bite — where your upper and lower teeth don’t meet properly, putting uneven strain on the jaw joint — orthodontic treatment that corrects the bite can reduce or resolve those symptoms over time.

When Braces Won’t Be Enough on Their Own

TMJ disorder often has causes unrelated to tooth alignment: jaw joint inflammation, arthritis in the joint, muscle tension from stress or grinding, or previous jaw trauma. In these cases, braces alone won’t address the root cause, and other treatments — a night guard, physical therapy, stress management, or in some cases further intervention — are more appropriate.

  • Your teeth don’t meet evenly when you bite down
  • Jaw discomfort that’s worse after chewing
  • Visible wear patterns on specific teeth
  • A history of missing teeth that’s shifted your bite over time

Why Diagnosis Comes First

Because TMJ disorder has several possible causes, treatment needs to start with figuring out which one — or combination — applies to you. X-rays and a jaw function assessment help determine whether a bite issue is actually part of the picture before recommending orthodontics.

What We Recommend

If you’re dealing with jaw pain, clicking, or difficulty chewing, start with an assessment rather than assuming braces are — or aren’t — the answer.

Book a TMJ assessment and we’ll help you figure out the right path forward.
