Can a Dentist Tell If You Smoke Weed?

Cannabis use can show up in your mouth in a few ways. Here's what to know before your next appointment.

It’s a common question, and a fair one: dentists aren’t in the business of reporting recreational habits, but cannabis use can leave physical signs in your mouth that a trained eye will notice during a routine exam.

What a Dentist Might Notice

  • Dry mouth (xerostomia). THC reduces saliva production, and less saliva means less natural protection against cavities and gum disease.
  • Gum inflammation. Regular smoking, of any kind, is linked to increased gum irritation and a higher risk of periodontal disease.
  • Staining. Smoke exposure can contribute to yellowing on the teeth, similar to tobacco staining.
  • Oral tissue changes. Chronic smoke exposure can affect the tissue lining the mouth and throat.

Why It’s Worth Mentioning

None of this is about judgment — it’s about giving your dentist accurate information to work with. Dry mouth from cannabis use is treatable (more water, sugar-free gum, or a prescription rinse in some cases), but only if we know it’s a factor. The same goes for any edibles or smoking habits that might affect a scheduled procedure or sedation.

How It Can Affect Treatment Planning

If you’re scheduled for a procedure involving sedation or local anesthesia, recent cannabis use can interact with those medications or affect how your body responds. Letting your dental team know ahead of time — the same way you would with alcohol use or any medication — helps them plan your appointment safely.

What We Recommend

If you use cannabis regularly, mention it during your health history review. It stays confidential and simply helps us give you more accurate, personalized care — including recommendations for combating dry mouth and protecting your gums.
