Are Veneers Bad for You?

Modern veneers are more conservative than their reputation suggests. Here's what's actually involved, and what's worth weighing first.

Veneers sometimes get an undeserved reputation online — usually from outdated procedures or extreme cosmetic cases. In reality, modern porcelain veneers are a well-established, minimally invasive treatment when placed by an experienced dentist.

What’s Actually Removed

A thin layer of enamel — typically less than half a millimetre — is removed from the front surface of the tooth to make room for the veneer. This step is necessary so the veneer sits flush and doesn’t look bulky, and it’s why veneers are considered a permanent decision: that enamel doesn’t grow back.

Are They Safe Long-Term?

With proper care — good hygiene, avoiding chewing on hard objects, and wearing a night guard if you grind your teeth — veneers can last 10 to 20 years without issue. They don’t decay themselves, though the natural tooth underneath still needs regular checkups and cleanings.

What Can Go Wrong

Like any dental restoration, veneers can chip or come loose, particularly with grinding or trauma. Poor placement or ill-fitting veneers can also irritate the gumline. This is why the skill of your dentist matters as much as the material itself — a well-planned case with a properly trained dentist carries far less risk than a rushed one.

Who Should Think Twice

Veneers require a solid foundation of healthy enamel and gums. If you have significant untreated decay, active gum disease, or very thin enamel, your dentist may recommend addressing those first — or considering a different restoration, like a crown, that doesn’t rely on as much of the natural tooth surface remaining intact.

The Honest Picture

Veneers aren’t “bad for you” in any inherent sense — they’re a well-understood cosmetic treatment with a real, but manageable, trade-off: permanent enamel removal in exchange for a durable, natural- looking result.
