5 Ways to Fix Crooked Teeth

Not every crooked tooth needs braces — here are five different approaches worth knowing about, and how to tell which one fits.

Crooked teeth can be addressed in more than one way, depending on the severity of the misalignment and whether you’re after a functional fix, a cosmetic one, or both.

1. Traditional Braces

Metal or ceramic brackets gradually move teeth into alignment over months to a couple of years — still the most effective option for significant misalignment or bite issues, since they actually move the tooth’s root position, not just its visible surface.

2. Clear Aligners (Invisalign)

A series of custom, removable clear trays gradually shift teeth, ideal for mild to moderate crowding or spacing, with a much less visible footprint than traditional braces. They require discipline, though — results depend on wearing them the recommended hours per day.

3. Porcelain Veneers

For teeth that are only slightly rotated or uneven, veneers can create the appearance of straight teeth by masking minor misalignment, without moving the tooth itself. This is a cosmetic fix, not a functional one — the underlying position doesn’t change.

4. Dental Bonding

A quicker, less expensive option for very minor unevenness — composite resin is shaped directly onto the tooth to visually even out its edges, usually completed in a single visit.

5. Retainers for Minor Relapse

If teeth have shifted slightly after previous orthodontic treatment, a retainer alone can sometimes correct minor movement before it needs more involved treatment.

How to Decide Between Them

Braces and aligners actually move teeth and can correct bite problems along the way; veneers and bonding change appearance without correcting alignment functionally. If your bite is affected — trouble chewing, uneven wear, jaw discomfort — that points toward orthodontics. If it’s purely a cosmetic concern on otherwise well-functioning teeth, veneers or bonding may get you there faster.
