5 Things That Can Stain Teeth
A rundown of the most common everyday causes of tooth staining, and what actually helps.
Staining builds up gradually, which makes it easy to miss until it’s noticeable. Here are five of the most common culprits — and what actually helps once staining has already set in.
1. Coffee and Tea
Both contain tannins, which are especially prone to sticking to enamel and causing yellow-to-brown discolouration over time. Tea, particularly black tea, can be just as staining as coffee despite its lighter colour.
2. Red Wine
Between its acidity, which softens enamel, and its deep pigments, red wine is one of the more efficient staining agents in a typical diet. White wine’s acidity can also make teeth more susceptible to staining from whatever you eat or drink afterward.
3. Berries and Dark Sauces
Blueberries, blackberries, tomato sauce, and soy sauce all carry strong natural pigments that can gradually discolour enamel with regular exposure.
4. Smoking and Tobacco Use
Tobacco causes some of the most stubborn staining we see, often leaving a yellow-to-brown tint that’s harder to lift with whitening alone — and it comes with broader oral health risks well beyond appearance.
5. Poor Oral Hygiene
Even without any of the above, inconsistent brushing lets plaque build up, which itself can discolour and dull your teeth over time.
Reducing Staining Day to Day
- Rinse with water after dark foods or drinks
- Use a straw for staining beverages when you can
- Keep up with regular cleanings, which polish away surface buildup before it sets in
- Brush within a reasonable window after eating — but wait roughly 30 minutes after anything acidic, since brushing immediately can wear down enamel that’s temporarily softened

When Staining Won’t Budge
Surface stains often respond well to a good cleaning, but deeper, set-in staining usually needs an actual whitening treatment — in-office or a custom take-home tray — to make a real difference, since these work by lightening the tooth itself rather than just polishing the surface.
